Hello!
So much has been said and written about achieving goals and productivity. Everyone has an opinion and “fresh” perspective.
Here’s an approach that’s not so fresh but will have the desired results of getting more done and achieving your goals. First, respond to these 10 questions – honestly, of course :-).
►10 “simple” questions:
- Are you clear on WHAT (more) you’re trying to get done?
- Are you clear on WHY? – Why getting that particular thing done is necessary – so necessary in fact that you are now wanting to do more of it and this “why” pops into your mind constantly…
- Are you clear on WHO benefits? – When that thing gets done (or those things) who benefits?
- Are you clear on HOW they benefit? – Can you see the “how” clearly in your imagination?
- Are you clear on WHEN you’d like (or, need) to get this done by? In order for your “why” to be honored and your “who” to benefit, “how” you want them to benefit, when does it need to get done?
- How badly do you want to get this done? On a scale of 1-10, are you at a 10, or at least a 9.5?
OK…so those questions may be “simple” but the answers are far from simple!
If you answered ‘yes’ to the first 5 questions and some variation of “REALLY REALLY BADLY” – (#10 is best!) to question #6, move on to these: (Well, you can certainly read them even if you didn’t 🙂 but, you’re not really ready to achieve this goal until you’re clear on these first 6 questions…)
7. What stops you from getting more done and achieving your goals , usually?
8. If you had the power to immediately have an overnight change in your habits, which habit would you adopt so you can get more done?
9. What one thing can you stop doing on a daily basis that would make it possible to get more done and to achieve this goal?
10. Do you want to get more done and achieve your goal badly enough to stop doing that thing▲ in #9?
If your answer is “no” to the last one, reading this article will be a waste of your time, at this time.
The most truthful thing that can be said to yourself about getting more done and achieving your goals is this:
“How much more I can and will get done is directly correlated to how much I WANT (REALLY want, as demonstrated by my actions) to GET more done.”
If you want it badly enough you will demonstrate your total commitment by doing the following:
Start creating that habit you referred to in question #8.
Stop doing that one thing you referred to in question #9.
It really is that “simple.” Simple but not easy! But we do tend to over complicate life. You will make the necessary changes required to get more done just as soon as you are ready and willing to be fully committed to getting more done (and be accountable for what you are committed to).
►What stops you from total commitment to your goals? Answering this question will require some honest self-reflection…
Some answers I have received over the years are:
“I’m not sure this is what I should be doing or have the ability to achieve”
“I don’t know if I can really do this!” (“I mean really really”)
“I’m afraid I won’t be any good at doing what achieving this goal requires”
“It sounds like a lot of work involved in doing more and achieving this goal”
“If I do more, people will then expect me to do more all the time”
“I honestly don’t think I can do more and achieve this goal” – shortage of either time, energy, skills, BELIEFS, etc…
“To achieve this goal means changing my life – my routines and comfort levels will be all different”
“I don’t want to do the work” – “I’ll have less fun” – “It sounds hard” – “It’s not me….”
If you hear yourself in any of these – stay still for a bit and reflect on why that is…
►Identify your time-wasters…Very popular ones are:
-
- Excessive TV and other mind-numbing entertainment
- On-line activities – social media, surfing internet, “research,” etc
- Talking/hanging with other folks who are not getting more or much done
- Looking for misplaced things
- Feeling badly about not getting more done
- Feeling down – in general
- Not forgiving yourself and moving on!
►Some skills/habits to develop to get more done:
-
- Visualizing yourself doing the things necessary to achieve the goal and daily imagination sessions – of the doing and the achieving
- Organization – having/maintaining systems for papers, projects, files, etc
- Accountability – checking in with someone on what you intend to do and being held accountable
- Early to bed/early to rise – no need to explain!! 🙂 [Nothing like predawn productivity]
- Communication – to delegate, explain, connect, etc
- Goal-Setting – having targets, milestones, helps with accountability…no success without goals
- Forgiveness – keeping the pipeline to your blessings OPEN, lightening your load so you have space for increased productivity
- Planning, Preparation, Practice…- we get more done when we plan to! Preparing our minds and our environment to get more done is crucial…and practicing the things we do ahead of time gives us more time to do more and better quality of outcomes
- Healthy Eating – get the foods out of your body that drain you and deplete your energy, and eat those that help
- Exercising & Meditating – great energy boosters and head clearing; great side benefits too like excellent health 🙂
