Hello!
I took a break from writing daily blog updates for several reasons. I won’t bore you with details but let me just say this: Time is short, life is fuller than full and sometimes adjustments need to be made so everything can get done as needed. I needed to spend more time writing, editing and creating a product that will help so many people. It’s very exciting! {Didn’t make it to the beach as the picture implies but I can dream! 🙂}
But I love writing for this blog and have decided to commit to a minimum of 3 updates per week – on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
This blog – Habits that Help was created to help us create habits that will help us help others. I am passionate about living a life of service. Self-help for the sake of just ‘helping self’ is irksome to me. It is the height of self-centeredness to live a life that is all about you. This post says more…
I’ve minced my words a bit – not wanting to offend folks – but you know what, my time away has given me some space for reflection and I will mince no more. I will not be offensive, I will not be unkind, but moving forward, I will be much clearer about what I am here to do. “Here” – meaning here on earth.
I am here to help you help others.
This multi-billion dollar self-help industry of ours has my eyebrows raised. Perhaps we need to be guiding people away from their ongoing concern with “self” (yes, yes ,yes…I know we have to be right with self before we can help another – but there comes a point when we can take the spotlight and shift it elsewhere) and into action – getting involved in programs and initiatives that help their community and the world at large.
With so much attention on inspiring, motivating and being positive, it is really a shame that we continue to have so much pain, injustice and mean spiritedness in our world. Perhaps we need to start focusing elsewhere — not on self but on others, not on “self-help” but on “help others.”
Here are 7 quick tips on being other-centered on a daily basis:
- Go the bed with a thought to wake up eager to help the world be a better place
- Wake up with gratitude on your lips and a song of service in your heart
- After your morning routine, sit still for 5 additional minutes, thinking of ways you can concretely help TODAY
- Do at least one act of kindness per day for someone you do not know
- Go beyond the “news” and research a topic that is being reported on – in your community or another country. Get a few different sources and see if they all say the same things…research the differences. In other words get to the truth as best you can
- Get your family involved in a project in your community that is all about helping others
- Don’t repeat opinions you hear on TV or from friends unless you check their “facts.”
In helping others, we have to develop habits that help us to think independently and critically and get to the facts of situations and issues. Without this, we become part of the problem of the world, even as we “help.”
So, if you are excited about serving your purpose here on earth and helping others to do the same…let me hear from you.
Together we CAN be the change we need to see in our world.
You have a wonderful day!
Wishing you peace, love and joy,
♥~
